The Van Track

The ACR did not have much of a variety in vans (cabooses) but here are photos of ones they did use.

9505.jpg (123492 bytes) The ACR had about 20 of these wooden vans built in the 1940's with steel underframes. Here is the 9505 at Hawk Jct. on Dec. 26, 1979.
9506_1.jpg (100389 bytes) This van, the 9506, was different than the other wooden vans, and I never saw it in service during the time I worked there. It was sold sometime in the early '70's to someone for use as a private camp (or did it go to a museum?) somewhere east of Sault Ste Marie. Shown at Steelton on June 19, 1973.
9517.jpg (115105 bytes) Later on, some of the wooden vans were equipped with cushion drawbars, such as the 9517 shown here at Hawk Jct. on June 24, 1989. These vans were assigned to specific conductors, this one was Steve Ryan's van.
9520.jpg (116236 bytes) Another wooden van with the cushion drawbars. This is at Steelton on May 5, 1983.
9601_1.jpg (147221 bytes) As one of the terms for settling the 3 month long strike of 1976, the ACR had the CNR build 6 steel vans. These replaced the wood vans in most freight service, however they were not assigned to any one conductor. 9601 through 9604 were on the south end (Soo Sub) while the 05 and 06 were on the north end. Shown here at Hawk Jct. Feb 1, 1977.
9604.jpg (118904 bytes) This van is at Steelton on June 29, 1980. The Wisconsin Central has converted at least one of these vans for use as a remote control car.
9608.jpg (145900 bytes) The ACR bought 3 steel vans from the CPR around 1990 - here is one of them at Steelton July 27, 1992.
